OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is expected to announce a new search engine based on artificial intelligence (AI) on Monday (13). The launch had already been considered on previous occasions. The date initially suggested was last Thursday, but no such announcement was made by the company.
The launch of a new search engine promises, among other things, to threaten Google's reign in the sector.
This week, a source revealed that the domain "search.chatgpt.com", in your new search engine.
The new suggested date also brings a certain curiosity: if true, the announcement of an OpenAI search engine will take place just one day before the Google I/O, Google's event for developers. On that occasion, the company should reveal new features about Android 15 and search.
Will ChatGPT search engine displace Google?
Currently, OpenAI's main product is ChatGPT. The service is powered by the language model (LLM). A large language model (LLM) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) program that can recognize and generate text, among other tasks. LLMs are trained on huge data sets - hence the name "big". LLMs are based on machine learning: specifically, a type of neural network called a transformer model. The GPT can perform internet searches in real time to provide users with answers. It is not yet clear, however, how the supposed search engine will differ in terms of usability and availability.
In February this year, OpenAI held the Sora's launch, we already talked about it in another article. An AI capable of creating videos based on text commands. Unfortunately, Sora is not yet available to many users, but the tool should be released to more users later this year.
With the arrival of a new search engine, the company hopes to broaden its horizons and expand its range of options in the sector. Google is aware that it could be left behind and is innovating and has warned its employees. Proof of this is the addition of Gemini to the search.
Just like Bing and Google, this OpenAI search engine can rely on an AI widget, which would provide a text response with the results collected and citing the sources. Even with the strong partnership between the company and Microsoft, a ChatGPT search engine could take away part of Google's audience — which would be positive for Bing, given the sharing of technology with OpenAI.
Who dominates the search market?
Today, Google dominates the search market, with around 82% of participation, far removed from the 10% from Bing, which is second on the list.
Despite Google's extensive dominance, ChatGPT already has more than 180 million users and today leads the generative AI market.
Furthermore, the move is a defense of the growth of AI startup Perplexity, which is also building a smart search engine — and is already valued at more than US$ 1 billion.
Although Microsoft has invested and is on the board of OpenAI, it appears that BIG TECH is planning a new AI model to also compete with Google and OpenAI itself.
